Welcome to Our New Blog!

It's long overdue, this we realize. But better late than never, or so the saying goes.

Welcome to our new blog!

Crossroads University was developed for the purpose of sharing the ancient wisdom and cultural traditions that have supported indigenous people for thousands of years. Specifically, we are dedicated to the observation and preservation of indigenous magickal, spiritual and cultural traditions found in the Southern United States with African and Native American roots. Collectively, these traditions are referred to by various names, including Hoodoo, Rootwork, Conjure and Spiritualism.

We have had quite a few changes recently and felt it necessary to keep track of these changes on our blog so everyone can stay informed. Our student body has grown exponentially and we are thrilled to see so many people taking an interest in what we have to offer.

One of the changes we have made is regarding the required number of courses needed to complete the entire program. We have changed it to 10 core courses and 3 electives that must be successfully completed in order to be eligible for the certification credential. In addition to these courses, students are required to have 120 hours of face to face instruction by an approved practitioner. This means students may attend workshops or enter into an apprenticeship with  a practitioner in order to obtain those hours. There may be an additional cost for the face to face hours, but that is up to the provider. Crossroads University does not receive any sort of kickback or referral fee for the face to face training. In addition to the course work and face to face instruction, there is a comprehensive final exam that must be passed to succesfully complete the program.

Another change we have made is to the credential itself. After speaking with some of our consultants, we have changed the certification from Certified Professional Rootworker to Certification in Professional Rootwork. The reasoning behind this is based on feedback we have received. Our goal was never to churn out as many rootworkers as we can and in fact, we realize we cannot make you a rootworker. Whether or not you will be successful as a rootworker in whatever context you choose is up to you. We can only give you the information and experiences to help you achieve this goal. Though we have always believed this to be the case, some of the feedback received from our consulting board included the assumption by students and others that the credential will "make" someone a rootworker. A rootworker becomes a rootworker by doing; hence the experiential nature of our program. The credential indicates you have been given all of the information at or disposal that will allow you to apply the skills you develop that are essential to being a rootworker - if you are called to the path, that is. Not everyone is called to spiritual service. Only you will know that. We have attempted to only accept students who believe this to be the case. We are not concerned with teaching you how to become a commercial success selling Hoodoo wares or Indian spiritual supplies. Instead, we focus on the traditional and historical aspects of several different conjure traditions. Of course, this includes learning how to do everything from working with your ancestors to working at the crossroads, proper cemetery protocol,  and learning the wide variety of hallmark tricks that rootworkers all over the south have done for years. This includes, foot track magic, bottle spells, candle magic, lamp work, making formulas, spiritual baths and much more.

That said, and though we teach you how to do these things, we do not teach that these activities are the core values of rootwork. Instead, they are core activities. Values are a different thing. The values of rootwork stem from our ancestors; thus, we emphasize ancestor reverence throughout all of the courses.
